The footpath of Boca do Risco – Larano walk offers stunning views, ever-changing scenery and vegetation. It starts in Machico and finishes in Porto da Cruz, a lovely little village on the north coast. This old path was, for generations, used by the local people to move from one place to another, often carrying on their shoulders goatskins full of wine or large baskets filled with products coming from the farms.
The views of the dramatic north coast will amaze you with deep ravines rising from the ocean 300 meters below and before starting to walk down the steps, you will enjoy the views over the small village of Porto da Cruz and the Eagle’s Rock. Trip Specifications: Tour starts at 9h and finishes around 16h. Note that, although guide books mention a 4-hours walk, we will need all day as we do the walk at a reasonable pace, including stopping for lunch and for taking photos. Also, there are some ups and downs. More importantly, not suitable if you suffer from vertigo. This hike offers glorious views over the cliffs of the northeast coast, besides the ocean, green valleys, and small villages.

What do you need to bring? • A coat/ jumper because sometimes it’s a colder climate up at the top • Also, a windshield /waterproof jacket, because it’s rather windy • Besides, non-slip walking boots because the terrain can be uneven in some parts. • Make sure you have your Camera • Hat and sunscreen. If it’s a sunny day, you’re very exposed up there! • If you haven’t purchased a picnic, we remind you to take enough food and water as there is nothing available on the route. • To conclude, a swimwear because depending on the weather, there’s a possibility of swimming in the infinity pool in Porto da Cruz. • At last, take a bag to carry your litter away with you.
Good to Know on Boca do Risco – Larano Walk
• The path is not suitable for people with vertigo problems because parts of the pathway are narrow with a steep drop on one side, but most have a barrier running alongside. • Also, there are some steps and some narrow sections to overcome. •
Security: Considering safety, better to go with a guide and relax, instead of getting lost in the mountains of Madeira. For instance, if you fall or feel unwell, it is reassuring to know that the mountain guide activates the emergency system. Further, he/she sends a warning and the location of the group to the local authorities, enabling a quick rescue. To put it another way, all well worth the money for the hike.

Hotel Pickup (Departure time)

Comfort stop
To start with, we will drive to Machico village, in the southeastern part of the island. We will make a comfort stop for anyone who wants to have a coffee and use the bathroom as there are no facilities along the way!
Boca do Risco
We will start our daily walk and a short but steep ascent at Boca do Risco. When we reach the top, the views of the mountains to your left, the ravines and the ocean to your right, and later on, those of Porto da Cruz and the Eagle’s Rock are incredible. Then we’ll walk down the steps towards Porto da Cruz.

Enjoy exploring the old cobbled streets of this small village and your swim at the infinity pool.
Return Meeting-point
Then, at the end of the walk, your guide will stipulate the time and place to collect you. The meeting point is in front of the only church in Porto da Cruz, which we see from anywhere in this small village.

Furthermore, we will take you back to the same spot where we picked you at the start of the tour for the walk of Boca do Risco – Larano.
