Over four hours, this gourmet food and wine tour will take you to up to three top restaurants in Funchal. Each stop introduces a different chapter of Madeira’s culinary story — from the freshness of Atlantic fish to the richness of tropical fruit and the comfort of classic Madeiran sides. Expect gourmet food dishes such as tuna tartare served in a crisp corneto, sardines with passionfruit, black scabbardfish, tender beef espetada, and in-season desserts like passionfruit soufflé.
Every dish is matched with a Portuguese wine, creating a gourmet food pairing that enhances flavours and textures. In total, you will enjoy five wines, handpicked to complement the seasonal menu.

Behind the Tour What travellers say after they’ve done it
I joined the Gourmet Food & Wine Tour because I wanted something that felt like a proper evening out, not another generic tourist dinner. What I got felt personal – and much better than I had hoped.
From the first stop, the tone was set. The guide knew the chefs, the staff greeted us like expected guests, and the first dish – a modern twist on sweet potato with local herbs – came paired with a white wine selected for this experience from the North region. I’m not a wine expert, but I liked that someone was guiding us through the choices without making it feel like a lecture.
Each restaurant had a different feel. At the second stop, we had octopus and caramelised vegetables, perfectly balanced. The waiter explained the origin of each ingredient, and the pride in local produce was evident. My favourite wine was probably the white from the Alentejo that came with the main course: Espada fish with passion fruit sauce. Unexpected. Delicious.
By the third restaurant, it felt like we were among friends. We shared impressions, laughed about our favourites, and even made notes on the wines we liked. The dessert? A chocolate tart with Madeira liqueur – rich, light, and completely new to me.
I didn’t take many photos. It wasn’t that kind of evening. It was about being present, enjoying the conversation, and discovering how seriously Madeira takes its food culture, in the best way.
Would I do it again? Yes. Next time I visit, I’ll probably go for the private version – just to see what else they can surprise me with.
