  8. Good to Know Activity level

    HALF-DAYS

Levada dos Maroços — Mimosa Valley Levada Walk: This half-day walk is not very challenging as the trail itself is flat, and there is no concern about vertigo, but the ground is sometimes uneven. We walk at a reasonable pace, including stopping to take photos. Bathrooms are available at the coffee bar at the end of the trail. This trail is not recommended for children under eight years old.

Paradise Valley (Vale Paraiso Camacha): This half-day walk is easy, and the trail is flat and wide. We walk at a reasonable pace, including stopping to take photos. Bathrooms are available at the coffee bar in the trail’s middle or end. This trail is appropriate for children accompanied and supervised by an adult.

    FULL-DAYS

Levada do Rei (kings Levada): This walk is unsuitable for people with vertigo problems. Some parts of the path are narrow, with a steep drop on one side, but most have a barrier running alongside. There are only a few steps to overcome at the start/end of the walk and a short tunnel. There are bathrooms available at the start/end of the trail. This trail is not recommended for children under 8.

Levada das 25 Fontes Hike (25 Fountains): This trail is not suitable for people with vertigo difficulties. Parts of the path are narrow, with a steep drop on one side, but most have a barrier running alongside. There are some steps and narrow sections to overcome, as well as a 700m tunnel, which is flat and spacious. There are no bathrooms on the trail, so we stop at a café before and after the hike. This trail is not recommended for children under eight years old.

Ribeiro Frio Natural Park – Portela Levada (Levada Do Furado Madeira): The first part of the walk is smooth and flat for most of the day until the descent to Portela almost at the end. There are fences to protect you from the steep drops. We will cross several short tunnels, but the path is easy to walk, except for people with vertigo. This trail is not recommended for children under 8.

Parque Florestal das Queimadas – Levada do Caldeirao Verde: The first part of the walk is smooth going and flat, becoming challenging with up and down sections towards the end. There are fences to protect you from the steep drops. We will cross various tunnels, but the path is easy to walk, except for people with vertigo. This trail is not recommended for children under eight years old.

  9. Security Don't take risks

Better to go with a guide and relax, instead of getting lost in the mountains of Madeira. Knowing that the mountain guide activates the emergency system is reassuring if you fall or feel unwell. He/she sends a warning and the group’s location to the local authorities, enabling a quick rescue. All well worth the money for the hike.
